Membership of the Society is by invitation only and restricted to golfers over 55 years of age who hold a British passport and have been permanently resident in the UK for the five years prior to their proposal.
Each membership proposal requires a proposer and two seconders, who are responsible for submitting to the Secretary full details about the candidate and, in the event of their election, for making their introduction to the Society and ensuring their participation in the Society’s activities. Members may sponsor a maximum of one candidate in each year from 1st October.
A membership vacancy is created by the death or resignation of a member below the age of 80 or by a member reaching the age of 80, when they become an Honorary Life Member of the Society.
Following an annual review, all outstanding applications are included in a ballot, following which the successful names are submitted for final approval at the October meeting of the Committee. Currently, around 50 new members are elected annually from a pool of approximately 150. Subject to the proviso that the ballot shall not contain the name of an applicant who is over the age of 66 at the date of the ballot, all applicants are entitled to participate in a maximum of six annual ballots. If ultimately unsuccessful, they will not be considered further for election.
